MAP KEY

1 On the morning of 26 August, Edward III forms his army on a ridge between Crécy and Wadicourt, a strong defensive position. His three divisions of dismounted men-at-arms are organized in three lines, the first of which (the Prince of Wales’s division) is flanked (and probably also screened) by bodies of archers. The baggage lies to the rear, protected by more archers. The army rests and eats, awaiting the French.

2 At roughly 3pm Philippe VI’s army comes within striking distance of the English. The French king’s initial intention, to hold off the attack until the morrow, is frustrated by the knights of the leading batailles who refuse to back away once the English have been sighted. At about 6pm the Genoese crossbowmen, having rapidly formed up before the Comte de Alençon’s bataille, advance on the English position without their protective pavises, which are trapped in the baggage train some way behind the main force. They are shot down by the English bowmen and are forced to retreat in disorder.
